Frequently asked questions
What exactly is batana, and where does yours come from?
What exactly is batana, and where does yours come from?
Batana is the oil pressed from the nut of the American oil palm. Ours comes from La Moskitia in eastern Honduras, hand-crafted in small batches by Miskito families who have made it the same way for generations. One ingredient, nothing added, nothing taken out.
Is the 3.5 oz the same paste as the 1.8 oz?
Is the 3.5 oz the same paste as the 1.8 oz?
Exactly the same paste, from the same batches, in a bigger jar. The only difference is quantity and price per ounce. The large jar works out cheaper per use, so it is the one to choose if you already know you like it, if your hair is long or thick, or if more than one person in the house is using it.
Why is it a solid paste and not a clear liquid?
Why is it a solid paste and not a clear liquid?
Because it is raw. In its unaltered form batana sets firm at room temperature and melts the moment it touches your skin. The clear yellow oils you see elsewhere have been refined, bleached or deodorised, and that process strips out most of what makes batana worth using. Raw is the whole point.
What does it smell and feel like?
What does it smell and feel like?
Dense, deep brown, firm to the touch, and smoky and nutty in the way roasted coffee is. The scent is the roasting, not fragrance, and it fades on hair within a few hours. In a warm room or a warm delivery truck the paste can soften or separate. That is normal for something with nothing in it to hold it together, and it does not harm the oil. Put the jar somewhere cool and it firms up again.
How do I use it, and how much?
How do I use it, and how much?
Scoop a small amount, warm it between your palms until it melts, and work it through. As a pre-wash mask, apply to dry hair and scalp 15 to 30 minutes before shampooing. Overnight, massage it into the scalp and lengths and wash it out in the morning. For a finishing touch, the smallest amount on ends and flyaways. Two or three times a week is plenty, and less is more.
How long does a 3.5 oz jar last?
How long does a 3.5 oz jar last?
Roughly two months for most people using it two or three times a week on hair and scalp, and longer if you use it only on ends or only once a week. Heavy use as a full-length mask on long hair will run through it faster.
